Before I became a professional photographer, I’d been able to see a few of my intellectual idols in person — people like Michael Sandel of Harvard, Martin Wolf of the FT, Daniel Kahneman of Princeton, economists Diane Coyle (and former boss of mine), Olivier Blanchard and Vicky Price and Walthamstow MP Stella Creasey. Most of these I’ve seen an heard from rather afar — sometimes from the outer reaches of a packed auditoriam. As a photographer, I’ve attended countless protests, marches and other activist events. and have been able to get very close up indeed to some political heavyweights. I’ve photographed Zac Goldsmith on the mayoral campaign trail, Dr. Tania Matthias when she was MP for Twickenham, the chancellor Phillip Hammond and Alaister Campbell — all very exciting for someone as interested in political economy as I am. But recently I’ve been able to photograph two of my political heros: Chuka Umunna, MP for Streatham and most recently former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, both of whom are campaigning vigorously for the Open Britain campaign. My political dream team for government would have included Chuka, Nick and the wonderful Jo Cox, (rest her soul). It’s a great privilege to occasionally get to be so close to politics and to help Open Britian in my photographic way.
