So popular has the annual Orchid Festival in Kew Gardens become, that it’s now necessary to book a viewing time slot. If you love the feel of being in a tropical paradise and so escape — if only for an hour — the dull, grey of February in London, this is the exhibition for you. Over the past few years, the orchids which comprise the displays have come from India, Brazil, Colombia and Thailand. This year the collection was from Indonesia. I’d like to say it was a riot of colour, which it is, but despite the throngs of visitors, the atmosphere is tranquil. Next year I plan to make my visit in an early morning slot for Kew members only — that will be the dream!
