An Urban Woodland in Leeds

On a recent visit with one of my daughters at Leeds University, Billie and I had a little spare time and so went exploring the environs of her halls of residence. ¬†And to my delight we happened upon Woodhouse Ridge — a woodland oasis not a half an hour away from Leeds City Centre.

Rumour has it that there was a Civil War battle here in part of the forest called Batty’s Wood in 1643 in which a stream called Stainbeck ran red with blood and there was a large exchange of musket balls. ¬†Since the evidence is slight, it’s almost more of a legend today.
