I’ve been volunteering my photography services to the Open Britain Campaign for almost a year now.  This is a cross-party organisation whose goal is to fight against a hard, destructive Brexit.  I moved to the UK in 1990 to undertake a graduate degree and one of the reasons I chose London was the anticipation of what was called at the time ‘EC92’ — which became the Maastrict Treaty, setting out tenets for the integration of European states.  There isn’t an economist alive who wouldn’t agree that the European Union has flaws, but most believe, as Open Britain does, that the UK is stronger with Europe — not least of all economically.

I do appreciate that Open Britain isn’t aligned with only one poiitical party, though only the Liberal Democrats actively campaign for MPs to have a final say on any Brexit deal.  Which made me decide to finally sign up — formally — as a lib dem member.  I was very excited last year when our consituency had for around five months a Liberal Democrat MP, Sarah Olney, following the resignation of Zac Goldsmith over the government’s decision for a third runway at Heathrow.  I thought she’d breathed political life into our borough and I do hope she’ll be running again at the next general election.  In the meantime, I’ve decided to volunteer for my local lib dem candidate for Richmond Council, Ian Craigie.  I was able to meet the small team of the lib dem administrators and canvassers recently during a visit to Gloucester Court.  Despite the damp conditions, it felt great to be a part of something I believe in.
