This past June, everyone in my extended family, reunited in Palm Springs for a week of desert sun, summer activities and dinners round a 13-seater table. Most drove in from Orange County, including my parents, younger brother, sister and her family (including their terrier, Finnigan); my older brother and his wife from the Boston area and my daughters with one of their partners and I from London. After a tumultuous year for my mother with some serious health issues, we all felt deep gratitude to be able to share a week together somewhere somewhat remote and fabulous. My mom had chosen the most gorgeous and quintessential mid-century modern house with a guest house in the neighbourhood of Deepwell Estates in south Palm Springs.
Of all the moments we shared during that week in mid-June, I’d say that the most memorable for me were when we were all bobbing about on inflatables in the pool. With a temperature approaching 40 degrees, the water was fantastically temperate. Some played games, some drank beer and I suspect all felt they way I did: happy to be alive and together for those precious moments under that Californian sun.
